The RTX 4090 begs for a game that can make it shine

the new NVIDIA RTX 4090 It looks absurdly powerful. It’s a hot and power-hungry card too, and even without third-party benchmarks to confirm it, it’s already clear that the RTX 4090 outperforms the best cards from the previous generation.

But is there any actual benefit to all this power? Sure you can play the current catalog of AAA games in 4K with ray tracing enabled at over 100fps, but there’s nothing on the list that will actually push 4090, which is a problem for Nvidia. It may be a while before an exciting new game can show just how much the RTX 4090 can really do.

Useless fuss for all this buck

By Nvidia numbers, the RTX 4090 is twice as fast as the RTX 3090 Ti and four times faster in ray tracing games where DLSS 3 maybe. This is a huge leap, more in line with the advancement of the older generations compared to the newer ones where incremental improvements and feature updates have been more of a selling point.

But it is clear even from Nvidia’s own announcement that there is nothing to drive you to buy such a card. Higher frame rates and detail settings are always welcome, but if you’ve already played Cyberpunk 2077 movieand explore Microsoft Flight Simulator To your heart’s content, the RTX 4090 is just the extra horsepower with no enemy field.

Nvidia had to create an entirely new beta environment of its own, RTX rider, so you have anything new and exciting to offer. Elsewhere, old AAA games have been used almost exclusively to showcase the performance of their new card(s). surely Microsoft Flight Simulator At 100fps is impressive, but this game is already over two years old. Cyberpunk 2077 The new RT Overdrive mode with DLSS 3 and improved ray tracing looks great, but that game was pretty underwhelming at launch from a pure fun perspective, and most enthusiasts have already played it.

The only upcoming game Nvidia even mentions in its obscure criteria for the new card War Hammer 40,000: Darktide. Given that it is built on the same engine as 2018 Fermented 2Not packed with spacious environments or particularly detailed models, it won’t be the most demanding game ever.

Even taking a look at the proliferation of upcoming AAA games this year, there’s really nothing that would blow anyone away schematically. This doesn’t particularly matter from the players’ point of view, and this mostly independent player certainly doesn’t care, but it makes selling a new generation of ultra-powerful graphics cards a real obstacle for Nvidia. Especially when you’re looking to drive up prices and energy demand with it.

The only new feature is more performance

Where RTX 2000 Turing graphics cards promised ray tracing and DLSS support as a bonus to early adopters, and the RTX 3000 series promised comfortable frame rates in the most demanding games, the RTX 4000 does just that and a little more. DLSS 3 is the only truly unique feature.

And while it’s not really exclusive to this generation, Nvidia said it wouldn’t work well on previous generations of RTX threaded cores. While this claim may seem dubious to the more skeptical, it does at least give one clear benefit to the RTX 4090 over its predecessors, but when the purpose of DLSS is to offer more performance in the limited number of supported games, the card that is really More than fast enough for its current job, it doesn’t do much to encourage early adopters. More than that, its best feature, frame creation, he is Exclusive to the new Series 40 cards.

The advances in ray tracing are good, because ray tracing, for now, is still something worth performing. But despite its beauty, ray tracing has taken years to capture the soul of a player’s soul, and it still fails to do so.

Whether it’s due to performance limitations, or it’s still relatively limited use even in big games, doesn’t really matter. Ada Lovelace’s big selling point, like Turing and Ampere before it, is that it does ray tracing really well, and that doesn’t seem to be something most gamers are excited about right now.

Maybe the depositors can save the white elephant

As if in an appeal to the wider gaming community, Nvidia threw a bone at true RTX evangelists: RTX Remix. It’s a mod designed to make it relatively simple to upgrade and add ray tracing lighting to older games, even in older versions of DirectX. Consider the success of ray tracing in games like second earthquake And the Maine CraftThere is serious potential out there for some of the older, more popular games to give a new lease of life by re-mastering the unofficial RTX.

This is great, and I’m definitely excited about some of my favorite old games that still take up a lot of my time to get the RTX treatment. It’s also important to credit the designers with creating some of the most successful game genres in recent years, including MOBAs and battle royale games, so there’s the potential to use something like this to discover new and exciting ways to play.

But – and this is a big BUT – Nvidia is really hoping that people will spend $1600 to play the ray tracing resampler outlet? I certainly wouldn’t, but then I My RX 6950XT . has been overclocked Because it was very hot and noisy, so I’m probably not the target audience for such a card. Then again, who is it?

The RTX 4090 will be the most powerful graphics card for some time to come Unless RDNA3 is a real surprise. Probably sometime next year we’ll get some titles that could really pay – maybe poorly optimized ark 2Or maybe Star Citizen Another alpha will be launched.

But that’s no good at the moment, and ultimately leaves anyone deciding to spend what amounts to a high-end gaming PC on a single GPU, wondering what they can actually do with it and can’t actually do with an RTX 3090 for $500 less.

The answer, for now at least, isn’t much.
